From the Tips – FDL Golf Update May 2024

Dear Fleur-de-Lis Golf Members,

Hello, we hope this message finds you well!  We are excited to share another installment of From the Tips with you!

As a reminder, communication along with many others  will live on our club App and club Website so that you can access them at your convenience.  So that you know that a new message or update has been posted, we will send out a push notification through the club App as well as post a note in the very next weekly golf email.  Let’s get started!

May is always an exciting time in Louisville and this year is extra special with the PGA Championship in our backyard (at Valhalla) this month!  We greatly appreciate all of those members who are stepping up to Volunteer and help make this year’s Championship a big success!  Whether you are volunteering, just going out to spectate or watching on TV we hope you enjoy the Championship.  We have been in a few meetings and thought we would share some details about getting to Valhalla with you:

  • PGA Championship Parking/Drop Off: The main public parking for the PGA Championship is at the Kentucky Exposition Center (937 Phillips Ln, Louisville, KY 40209).  Volunteers will have separate parking and will receive the instructions if you have not already.  With it being such a long trip especially for those living close to Valhalla we have had a lot of questions about being dropped off at Valhalla and here are some key points on that subject:
    • There is no public parking, drop-offs, or walk-ins at or around Valhalla During Championship Week.  No walking, biking, or electric scooters will be permitted on Shelbyville Road for safety purposes.
    • Rideshare – There will be a monitored Rideshare drop off area near Valhalla and there are three Rideshare companies dropping off and picking up there…UBER, Lyft, or Z-Trip.  Spectators electing to utilize UBER, Lyft, or Z-Trip must be picked up and dropped off at the PGA Championship’s Official Rideshare lot located near Valhalla Golf Club. For an efficient Rideshare experience, simply enter “2024 PGA Championship” as the destination in your Rideshare app of choice and your driver will take you to the designated Rideshare lot. Spectators utilizing rideshare will enter and exit the Championship grounds through the Main Spectator Entrance, a short walk from the Official Rideshare lot.  Please note, the PGA Championship cannot guarantee the availability of rideshare options especially during peak times.
    • For more information on the tournament experience, here is a link to their website where you can find policies, hours, TV coverage info and much more…  https://www.pgachampionship.com/spectator-guide
  • Handicap Committee Update – As has been communicated throughout the beginning of this year we have established a Handicap Committee for our club(s).  As our club’s handicap database is one database as Fleur-de-Lis Clubs, we have one committee with representatives from each of our three clubs serving on the committee.  See the link below for an update from the Handicap Committee as well as a few other bullet points regarding handicap posting:
    • Match Play Posting: Per USGA Rules scores shot during Match Play must be posted.  Our club has adopted a policy on posting Match Play Scores that can be viewed by clicking this link:

    • As a reminder, in order to be eligible to participate in our club events/tournaments you must keep your GHIN Handicap with our club so that you are in our club’s database.  If you need help moving your handicap or establishing a handicap, please contact one of our Golf Professionals and they will be happy to assist you!
  • New GHIN Stroke off the Low Ball procedure for Match Play – The USGA has changed the procedure for figuring handicaps in four ball match play events.  Starting in 2024, the method for calculating “off low” Playing Handicaps has been updated to ensure that rounding is the final step in the process. In the past, “off low” was determined based on the rounded Playing Handicap. However, from January 1st, 2024 onwards, “off low” for specifically Four-Ball and Foursomes tournaments will be calculated using the unrounded Course Handicap, and then the allowance will be applied before rounding to determine the Playing Handicap.
    • Here are a couple charts to help you understand how the “Strokes” in a 4-ball match will be calculated going forward.  Keep in mind that the “strokes” are the strokes you receive in the match regardless of your normal playing handicap for that set of tees.
